‘Barbon Hill Climb: A race to the top’

By Laura Taylor, Ruth Postlethwaite and Alex Brabbing

Towards the beginning of the year, there was an advertisement on ‘PULSS’ for a competition posted from ‘INFLUX’ magazine to create a pitch for a short film which, if short-listed, would go into production. We created a pitch surrounding Liverpool Motor Club’s Hill Climb event in Barbon, The Lake District. Months after sending off our treatment, we received an email to say we’d been shortlisted and had 5 months to produce the film.

We filmed the regional qualifying round on 6th July 2019 at Barbon in Kirby Lonsdale on the wettest weekend possible. We booked our equipment out of the University equipment store for the weekend and we had a challenging time trying to keep the cameras dry. Despite the torrential rain, there was still a great turn out for the event and we were able to get two interviews with drivers who had entered the event, who told us stories of how they got into motorsport and why Barbon Hill Climb is such a great event.

Once the film had been edited over summer by Ruth, we submitted to the ‘INFLUXPOSURE’ competition and waited to see the outcome. At the beginning of the first semester in third year, we had a phone call from INFLUX magazine explaining we had won the competition, due to our extremely high level of production and the professional feel of the film. As well as winning the £2,000 cash prize, we have all gained amazing amounts in confidence going into third year and hopefully will be working alongside INFLUX in the future.
