Graduates into the workplace

Several graduates this year have already secured jobs and placements before they’ve even graduated!

Lois Frost | Junior Researcher | LA Productions

My lecturer recommended me for a placement position within LA productions’ factual department as they were looking to offer experience to students. My role was as a researcher, coming up with ideas to pitch to different television channels. Within that role I learnt a lot about the television industry and how creative professionals work In the earliest stages of production. After the placement duration had ended, my name was put forward to the main body of the company. I was then called into cover reception whist the permanent receptionist was in production for LA productions’ recurring BBC One show ‘Moving On’. I shared this receptionist position with another Media Production student who also worked with LA Factual. After a few weeks working on reception, I began to get to know the team and I was offered a full-time job as a Junior Researcher, which is exactly the line of work I wanted to go in to. I’ve been working full time at LA for about a month now and I am really enjoying it, I’m working on a number of exciting projects and everyone gets on really well. It’s just like a big family.

Chloe Hesketh and Emily Brooker | Production Assistant paid placements| ITV Shiver

I am working as a Production Assistant for the Shiver department at ITV, which is basically the factual department.

Job involves: logging archive footage, in depth researching, innovation of new ideas, working as a team and using my own initiative, being flexible and able to work on a variety of TV programmes, always feeding back to the producer.

I have been to various meetings, one at which a commissioner for ITV came to discuss  examples of new documentaries which the London team are about to create. They explained the types of ideas they are looking to commission – this made it feel that Media is not just about creating a product but there is a business side to it too.

I am also working with Patrick Talbot (who studied this course too) and he has worked on various programmes across from BBC and ITV- this made me feel really confident about our University Course.

After doing this placement it has made me think, why did I not do this sooner, it is not as hard as I think!
